I hear lots of different definitions of coaching, so I am going to keep it straight-forward. A coach enables you, the coachee, to explore your thoughts, issues, feelings and questions which leads you to gain clarity and insight in working through solutions. How do I know this? I am both a coach and a coachee. I have regularly accessed a trusted coach for several years and this has been invaluable in helping me to see issues in a different way and with a new perspective. It has critical to my development as a leader and achieving my career ambition of being an HR Director and CEO.

As a coach, I always (and yes, I do mean always) end a coaching session with the coachee sharing how useful the session has been to help them see things with more clarity, being able to see the real issue at the heart of it and leave with a new approach and armed with solutions.

Coaching is not about advising. Coaching is not about telling. It provides people with a safe space to talk candidly and, if required, to be able to show vulnerability. It is a confidential session where a coach will listen attentively and then be curious by asking questions to help you, the coachee, delve deeper into the issue you are struggling with.

In my experience, coaching is one of the most valuable tools to gaining greater insight and self-awareness. This has been well researched as one of the most important skills to have as a leader. It will enable you to engage with your team and colleagues, you will be able to ensure you are bringing out the best in your team. Those who experience coaching have been proven to then behave in the same way creating a culture across teams that is based on the same principle of coaching. In other words, a manager with a coaching style won’t jump in with solutions but will create space for their team to work through problems and find their own solutions. This leads to empowered individuals, creative teams, a focus on solutions and accountability. This creates an environment where people can thrive and when that happens, the business thrives too.
