Bloggers work tirelessly aiming for one main goal, to monetize their blog. One thing for sure is it will not happen overnight. But when you have the right plan in place and consistently work at it, you can make real money blogging.

There are many ways to monetize a blog like selling ad space and creating your own product. I’ve tried both of those methods and I’ve made some money here and there. But one thing that has worked for me is working with sponsors on their brand’s campaign.

An influencer is a blogger who has developed a dedicated community on their blog or on social media who trusts and values their opinion. And it’s not just for celebrities.

Many brands realize how much influence a blogger has. They know an influencer has the power so to speak – to convince a visitor to love or hate a product based on their opinion. So instead of paying millions of dollars to a celebrity, they are looking for bloggers like you to spread the word about their product.

There are a ton of influencer networks you can sign up with to connect with brands. One of my favorites is Socialix. I signed up with Socialix back in 2015. I’ve have had the pleasure of working with brands like Giving Assistant, SingleCare and Fat Media and they are always adding new campaigns.

And you have the option to be compensated or get a free product.

What Sponsors Look For In a Blog

I’ve had several new bloggers comment that they’ve applied for sponsored post but haven’t been accepted. Believe me when I say I’ve gone through that plenty of times when I first started blogging and I think I know the reason why you’re not getting invites either.

I’ve put a list of three things sponsors look for in a blog.

Are You Engaging With Your Audience?

Sponsors want to see if you’re engaging with your community. They want to make sure when you promote their product you’ll engage in conversations about it with your visitors and followrs.

Do you reply to blog post comments? Are you encouraging conversations on your social media pages? Are you replying to comments left on your social media posts?

So if you’re not engaging with your audience…I would start like right now. 

Does Your Blog Have A Steady Stream Of Traffic?

Sponsors are shelling out the big bucks for their product to be seen across the socialverse so they want to make sure the bloggers they partner with has a decent amount of traffic to their blog.

If you’re struggling with traffic here is a quick example of things you can do to drive traffic to your blog.

  • Make sharing buttons visible on your blog
  • Include tweetables in your blog posts
  • Comment on other blogger’s content
  • Include a call to action in your blog post asking readers to share

Have You Participated In Other Campaigns?

Sponsors want to see if you’ve completed any campaigns before.

In case you haven’t, one way to get some experience blogging about products is to do product reviews. You won’t be paid for your content but you do get to keep the products you’re reviewing so that’s another perk. So when you’re browsing for campaigns on Socialix, don’t overlook those freebies!

The content should flow like any other blog post. You don’t want it to sound like you’re doing a commercial for the product you’re promoting. Instead, it should provide value to your readers and flow as if you’re having a conversation with your reader.

More importantly, you want to share a story behind the product you’re promoting – something your audience can relate to.

Other Ways to Get Noticed

Once you’ve worked on driving traffic to your blog, you’re engaging with your community and you’ve got the content, it’s time to get your blog out there. Here are some ways to get noticed by influencer networks and brands.

Prepare a media kit to showcase your stats, brands you’ve worked with, popular posts and a mini bio. Here is a post I wrote called Promote Your Blog and Get Noticed With A Media Kit. It explains what goes in a media kit in more detail and where you can find affordable templates.

Create a “sponsored post” category. Make it visible on your blog so sponsors and influencer networks can easily find your previous work.

Last But Not Least – And This Is Very Important

It’s important to remember when it comes to accepting a sponsored post it’s not all about the money. I know it can be very tempting to accept a campaign especially when you haven’t made any money with your blog. Don’t ruin your reputation as a blogger. There are other ways to make extra money while you wait on your blog to monetize.

Remember, when selecting a campaign, you have to take into consideration whether the product you will be promoting is relevant to your blog. And this is a biggie, whether the product will be beneficial to your fans and followers.
