7 Ways to Raise a Science-Minded Kid

Science is not exactly the easiest subject for most kids. Heck, I wasn’t found of it either when I was a kid because the learning experience was so boring. I mean, I didn’t step into a science lab until I was in high school and by then I had other interests…like boys and parties on the weekend!

But, as a parent, you (we) actually have an important role in setting your (our) children up to like science. Why? Because you just might have the next scientist to find a cure for cancer or discover a new break-through treatment for some other disease.

Introducing science to your child at an early age can have a huge impact on your child. School curriculums now includes Science but their learning shouldn’t stop there.

7 Ways to Raise a Science-Minded Kid

If you surround your child with science at home, there is an even better chance he or she will grow up to become scientists.

These are the seven ways you can raise science-minded kids.

#1 Encourage Early Exploration

During the early stages of childhood, kids are naturally curious. After all, they are just starting to comprehend the world that they are living in. Not only do they ask questions but they set out to do small experimentations on their own. As a parent, you should not stifle this. What you need to do is set up an encouraging environment that will support them for being natural scientists.

Do not scold them when they ask too many questions. Explain to them things in ways that they can understand. Just make sure they are surrounded by encouraging people and they will be fine.

#2 Go To Science Field Trips Often

It is never too early for a science field trip with kids. In fact, any trip can be infused with science if the parent is just creative enough. But just for the sake of excitement, it would be best for parents to bring their kids to science museums and zoos.

These field trips will give them an appreciation of science even more as they will be able to see scientific concepts in real life. There is a reason why field trips are an important component of the school experience. Experiential learning provides another dimension to the concepts that kids learn at school and at home.

#3 Facilitate Sensory Play

One of the most effective ways parents can stimulate the interest of science on children is through encouraging sensory play. Sensory play is when the senses of a young child is stimulated. This results in them engaging in exploration and cognitive scientific processes.

Sensory play also is beneficial for children as it enhances the learning capacity of the kid. These hands-on activities sharpen cognitive growth, motor skills, problem solving and language development of the child. It can even improve the kid’s social skills.

#4 Do Experiments

Experiments are one of the easiest ways a parent can help in making their child science-minded. Think of them as practical ways to explain certain scientific concepts to your kid. This will give them a more realistic view of how the world works and stimulates their curiosity further.

Another benefit of experiments to children is the fact that it facilitates creative thinking and resourcefulness. It can spark ideas in their minds that never occurred to them before.

In choosing science experiments that you will be doing with your kid, choose the classic ones. Do the experiments more than once so that they will be able to slowly understand the process behind the experiment.

#5 Answer Their Questions

The moment a child learns to talk, they will also be learning to ask questions. The terrible twos, for example, is not just named that because of the unruly behavior of children during this development stage. It is also because of the many questions that they ask which can be overwhelming for any parent.

No matter annoying it can become, make sure to answer their questions. Do not shut them down as that could cause them to stop asking altogether. Answer to the best of your ability. Mix it up once in a while by asking them a question in return. In case your kids are already studying science subjects in school, have them a science tutor to help them with their homework and understand it better.

#6 Buy Child-Friendly Science Books

Parents can be more involved in the quest to making their child science-minded by reading science-related books to them. Make sure that these books are child-friendly. For example, kids will definitely like it when there are illustrations and pictures in the book. If there are puzzles that they can solve as well, the better for them.

#7 Subtly Introduce Scientific Method

The scientific method is not only applicable to science experiments. It can be applied in almost all aspects of life. This is why it would be a good idea for parents to introduce the method to children subtly. They do not even have to call it “scientific method” yet as that can be quite heavy for the developing mind of the child. This also gives them a more realistic view of what scientists actually do.
