So You Decided To Work From Home: Here’s What You Do Next

Updated: April 9, 2018

So you decided to work from home. I’m sure you’re wondering what comes next.

Now, if you planned to quit your job to work from home, more likely than not, you already know what it is you want to do.

But if you’re a stay at home mom who decided to work from home on a whim or if you just up and quit your job like I did, you’re probably sitting in fron of the computer thinking “okay, now what.”

And that’s where the tips I’m about to share with you come in.

You see, when I started working from home, I didn’t plan on it, it just happened. Let me explain.

Without boring you with all the details, let me just say the day I quit my job it was a built up from years of working long hours and never seeing my kids. Not to mention my relationship with the hubs was about to hit the skids if I worked late just one more time. And by late I mean not leaving the office until 11:00pm (sometimes later than that) when I got there at 7am.

Anyway, that morning I had a conference call with my director and it didn’t go well. We had some words and that was the end of our conversation. I walked out, went to my office and wrote my letter of resignation.

After my “take this job and shove it” dramatization, it hit me on the way home.  The reality of me having walked out on a well-paying job with great benefits sunk in. I cried all the way home because I had no idea what do to next.

The next day when I was sitting in front of the computer and I was like “great, now what.” There was no going back now because I sure as h*ll wasn’t going to ask for my job back. It was time to sink or swim.

Things To Do When You Decide To Work From Home

Whether you made the decision in haste or after a decision-making process, there still has to be a plan of action to avoid a “now what” moment.

So here are the things to do when you decide to work from home, at least from my experience.

Decide What You Want To Do

The first thing to do is to decide what you want to do. Do you want a work-from-home job or do you want to start your own home-based or online business? Why does it matter? Because different types of research is involved. And besides, you should take a moment to think about it before moving forward. It will avoid any regrets you might have at the first signs of a bump in the road.

So if you decide on a work-from-home career first of all, you need to develop a job search routine. If it’s a home-based business you want, think of what you’re passionate about and let those ideas start coming to you.

Create Goals And Make A Plan

Now that you know what you want to do, the next step is to create goals and make a plan. It used to be that you can write your goals down on a sheet of paper, print it out, pin it up and be done with it.

And you can still do that but in 2018 it’s all about the vision board. A visions board is a collage of words and images that represent your goals and dreams. You can create one using a poster board or cork board.

Start with a goal and build around that. You can include things like your favorite quotes that motivates your or pics of the fam to remind you why you’re doing what you’re doing.

There is no wrong way to make a vision board but if you need a little help to get started there’s a great article on HuffPost that will show you how to create your own vision board and explains why it works.

Don’t Wait, Take Action

I learned this the hard way. If you’ve dreamed about starting a home-based business of your own, don’t wait, take action now.

A lot of the times it’s the fear of the unknown that can stop you from taking that risk.

I had many ideas for a home-based business but I never took any action to get the ball rolling because I was afraid to fail.

Sometimes I wonder where would I have been had I taken action on my plans the moment the idea came to me. As a result, I missed out on a lot of opportunities.

Oh well, there is no use crying over what could have been. I can only look forwad.
